How to Plan the Perfect Summer Road Trip with Farmers Market Finds

Ah, summer road trips—there's nothing quite like hitting the open road with your playlist on full blast, windows down, and the promise of adventure around every corner.

But whether you're headed to a beach, a mountain retreat, or a charming little town, one thing’s for sure: you’ll need some tasty road trip snacks to fuel the journey. Why not stock up on fresh, local goodies from your nearby farmers market?

Here's how to plan the perfect summer road trip, all while supporting local farmers and enjoying the freshest bites.

First things first, let's grab some breakfast

As soon as you arrive at the market you're going to want to beeline for some coffee and a little something delicious to get your day started. Why not start out with a bagel from Masses Bagels, a fresh made omelette from The Omelette Guys or even a giant spring roll from Giant Springs

Now that we've got full tummies and a little pep in our step we're ready to start filling the Esky and our market totes with some market snacks!

Don't forget hydration

When you’re on the road, dehydration can sneak up on you, especially if you’re cruising under the hot summer sun. Fortunately, farmers markets are bursting with fresh fruit that’ll keep you hydrated and refreshed. Watermelon is a juicy, water-packed fruit that is perfect for hot days. Grab a mini melon (or any of their other delicious varieties) from Save our Soil or Go Just Nuts to snack on as you drive. Fresh berries like blueberries (Moondarra Blueberries, Whitland Blueberries, Mirboo North Blueberries), raspberries (Sennsational Berries) and strawberries (Benny's Berries, Kookaberry Berry Farm) are not only hydrating but loaded with antioxidants to help keep you feeling your best while travelling.

While you might be tempted to grab a bag of chips, why not opt for something a little different to satisfy that crunchy urge? If you're craving something salty pickles are your perfect companion. They're full of electrolytes, which is especially handy if you're spending hours in the car. Plus they're super portable! Why not try something a bit different and grab a jar of the pickled cucumber chips from Acide

A long drive means you’ll probably want something a little more substantial than snacks.

But you don’t want to be the person who packs a bland sandwich. Fortunately, our markets have an array of fresh ingredients that will make creating a masterpiece both easy and exciting. Start off with some fresh bread from Flinders Sourdough, Bills Bakeshop, Back Alley Bakes or Elwood Sourdough. Grab some gorgeous greenery from Oz Fresh Herbs, some protein from La Villa Salumi, don't forget the cheese from Long Paddock, Milawa Cheese or Dreaming Goat. Add your final touches with some pate, pickles or chutney from Obelix & Co, Lártisan, Acide, Judes Jams and Chutneys, Timmering Food and Beverage Co

What's a road trip without a little something sweet, right?

Why not grab yourself a delicious sourdough pastry from Ket Baker or a slice of pie from Cakehouse Collective? There's even baked cheesecake from Amaimono and perfect road trip sized tubs of tiramisu from TRMSU. Why not an award-winning jar of caramel from Trois Bon that's perfect for dipping fresh summer strawberries in? And we know you'll be wanting chocolate, so ensure you stop by Planet Cocoa.

When you reach your destination, a refreshing drink is mandatory.

If you're hanging around for a while why not enjoy the summer weather with a beer from Mog Brew, some alcoholic iced teas from Subtle Tea or even some boozy soda from Wonki. And for the designated drivers there is the wide array of flavours from The Goodbrew Co or a fresh strawberry lemonade from Benny's Berries.
